What is MINOXIDIL?

There are many treatments for hair loss and one of the most prevalently used is minoxidil. Minoxidil was originally formed as a tablet, it was proven that unwanted hair growth came to be the interesting side effect. Researchers and medical practitioners were encouraged to produce a topical minoxidil solution for treating hair loss.

Minoxidil has the ability to reverse or slow down the hair loss process. This kind of treatment expands small blood vessels and if this is applied twice a day on the affected area of the human scalp, it has been shown to stimulate hair regrowth by enhancing cell proliferation which is the growth and production of cells by multiplication of parts. Researches were able to produce 2% and 5% minoxidil topical solutions. The 5% concentration is preferably intended for men, whereas the 2% concentration solutions are specially formulated for women. The 5% concentrated solution is probably more efficient than the 2% concentrated solution although the 5% solution shows a greater result of irritation than the 2%. The most common side effect is itchy scalp.

Minoxidil is proven to be a potent remedy to treat male and female pattern hair loss and it is sporadically useful to heal other forms of hair loss such as alopecia areata and after a hair replacement surgery or chemotherapy. Minoxidil is applied directly on the affected area of the human scalp twice daily for at least six (6) months. Studies show that minoxidil is less efficient when there is a large area of hair loss and it is designed to heal and promote hair regrowth for central or vertex balding only. Minoxidil treatment has no greater proof to promote hair regrowth on the front of the head or the receding hair line. Women are advised not to use this medication when they are pregnant and breastfeeding.

Minoxidil product involves contact with hair strands, minoxidil must be in an alcohol solution which other people find it hard to style their hair. However, minoxidil can be washed out from the scalp but the solution must also be in contact with the scalp for four hours for optimal effect. Consumers need not to worry about hairstyling because they can definitely use hair devices as soon as the minoxidil solution has dried. Minoxidil is sold by many brands and is just over the counter. However, it is still best to consult a physician to find out if one is a good candidate for the medication.
